FAQ

Here are a few of the questions we get asked a lot hence frequently asked questions (FAQ). There's no such thing as a stupid question though so if we haven't managed to answer yours here please get in touch and we'll do our best to answer it asap! We keep adding to the list so you might need to scroll down!

What should I wear?

A really good question and one that we get asked a lot so here are a few ideas. For a family shoot it's always a good idea to coordinate your outfits as this makes the images hang together better. We don't mean you all need to wear the same thing but one person in a suit and others in jeans would probably look odd!

Plain solid colours or stripes are better than patterns which tend to be overly distracting. Different colours suit different people but generally I would try and pick flattering colours for your skin tone, darker colours can be slimming and bold colours work well on kids.

Clothes with texture or an interesting collar/neckline can add richness to an image. Long sleeves are better than short as the arms can detract from the face - but there are always exceptions, don't let that put you off wearing a great dress or t-shirt that you really want to wear. Being comfortable is important - anything that makes you feel too self conscious will show up in your expressions!

Unless it's a fashion shoot try to avoid anything that is high fashion as that will date the picture very quickly (although we'll happily take your portrait again!!) Accessories like hats, coats and scarves work well. We actually encourage our clients to bring along several outfits so we can try out different looks!

Can I change outfits?

Absolutely! In fact we encourage our clients to bring along a few outfits. We have a changing area available and we always allow enough time for costume changes.

What sort of props can I bring?

Whilst we have a selection of props (mainly for small children) we recommend bringing something that helps convey a little more about you, for some that might be a guitar or some sports equipment, for others that might be a motorbike or a horse! (And no we aren't joking!) There is great access to our studio space at our St Albans studio and we can accommodate most requests but please do let us know in advance what you are thinking of bringing!

Can I bring my dog, cat, hamster etc?

Of course, pets are part of the family too! We sometimes have our dogs in the studio but they are usually asleep! Just let us know beforehand and we'll make sure there's some treats and water available! We often take family portraits with dogs and other animals. In fact we find some people just want pictures of their pets on their own which is also no problem. We can do that as part of a family shoot or as a seperate pet portrait session.

Can you make me look younger?

If that's what you would like us to do! Professional lighting goes a long way and we do provide a full digital makeover and professional retouching service to our clients. One of the benefits of digital photography is that just like the portrait painters of old we can subtley alter the digital images to present you in your best light. As part of your consultation please tell us what look you would prefer as what are lines to some are badges of honour to others!

Can I have digital copies of the photos?

Yes of course you can! One of the main ways we enjoy our images these days is digitally, whether that's sharing on Facebook or showing friends a gallery on our iPads so we offer digital file packages either as a stand alone option or as an addition to your wall products and prints order. These are currently provided either on disc or one of our stainless steel USB drives and are supplied with an unlimited usage and print license. We offer two different resolution options depending on your requirements.

When are you open?

All of our sessions are by appointment only, as with any bespoke service we try to be as flexible as possible for our clients. It does keep us on our toes as no two weeks are ever the same! We can often fit you in at short notice but please call the studio first!

What payment methods do you accept?

Not surprisingly we find cash, cheques (yes we still take those - made payable to Nexus Digital Ltd) or bank transfer works best for us! We can also take Mastercard, Visa, Amex and Diners Club but there is a small handling surcharge for using those cards. For those ordering through our online gallery the payments can also be processed through Paypal.

Which brand of camera do you use?

Whilst we are firmly of the belief that it's the photographer that makes the difference, for those that are interested we shoot with Professional Canon cameras and lenses! We also carry back up equipment should any of it fail so your shoot and pictures will be unaffected. We are also firm believers that the best camera to use is the one you have with you and like alot of people we use our iphone to take pictures. You can see some of the pictures we have taken in our iphoneography gallery.

I'm not sure what size prints / frames to order?

Don't worry we totally understand, not only do we work in feet & inches we can do metric too! Better than that when we meet up for your picture viewing we have some great software that can show you exactly what your pictures will look like on your wall! Just email us some pictures of where you are planning to put them (photos from a phone are fine) and we'll do the rest.

Where can I park?

Unlike many other photo studios we have plenty of free carpark spaces right outside our St Albans studio. This makes it really easy to bring any carrycots, props, changes of clothes, pets etc. into the studio.

It also makes it easy for us to do product photography so you can unload products for photographing straight into the studio space.

There is also free parking at our Hemel studio which we now ony use for simple headshots, viewings and passport photos.
